Why Excel matters more in the age of AI, not less

AI recalls function names in seconds. What it cannot do is frame the problem, choose the right approach, or validate the output. That judgement sits with the analyst. The analyst who has it directs AI. The one who doesn't gets replaced by it.

Is This You?

Your Excel exists. It just isn't at the level your target role demands.

You know the formulas but can't build a model from a blank sheet in an interview.

Tutorials don't look anything like real analyst work at Big 4, IB, or PE.

Your models break when the data changes or someone else edits the file.

Targeting IB, PE, FP&A, or equity research and you know your Excel isn't there yet.

You can't explain your logic. You just know it works, until it doesn't.

You reach for a function, it doesn't exist, and you're stuck.

13 Cases. Every One from Real Finance.

How an analyst thinks and reasons, not which function to memorise.

01Cell Referencing and Dynamic Arrays

Common-size a P&L or balance sheet the classic anchored way, then as one dynamic array. Convert a company's numbers across USD, GBP and EUR. Referencing the way it shows up in comparable company analysis.

02Beyond XLOOKUP: Every Match with FILTER

A single-answer lookup breaks the moment you need more than one match, which is most real questions. Pull every deal by one acquirer, then reshape a raw log into one clean row per investor. The move behind a coverage list and a pitchbook page.

03Dates as Numbers: The Backbone of Every Model

Excel stores dates as serial numbers. Once that clicks, date math and locale traps stop being mysteries. Build real timelines with EDATE and EOMONTH: coupon dates, fiscal year ends, holding periods, EMI and salary cycles.

04From Formula to Reusable LAMBDA: Tiered Logic

Solve a capital budgeting problem with SUMIFS and approximate-match XLOOKUP, the same tiered logic behind tax slabs, rating buckets and fee tiers. Wrap it in LET so it reads cleanly, then turn it into a LAMBDA a whole team can reuse.

05Period Metrics with Boolean Array Logic

Solve a YTD or LTM figure with one SUM formula driven by TRUE and FALSE arrays. This one idea unlocks SUMPRODUCT, FILTER and every dynamic array after it, and it is the logic behind every dashboard, factsheet and close pack.

06Set Theory in Excel: Overlap and Reconciliation

Turn a business question into set math: what two lists share, where they differ, the combined universe. Drives portfolio overlap, peer reconciliation, pipeline checks and audit tie-outs, roughly half of an analyst's early work.

07Annual to Monthly: Two Views in One Model

Use SEQUENCE and array logic to spread an annual plan across a monthly timeline from one start date, the spine of every operating model. Then hold both views at once: annual for the investor story, monthly for cash and operations.

08Ranking and Building a Dashboard

RANKIF does not exist, so you derive it from first principles. Then turn a stock or peer table into an interactive dashboard that slices data the way a manager actually asks for it.

09First Principles Thinking with Prime Numbers

Watch every direct function fail when two routes, or two-sided transactions, must count as the same thing. A number theory idea solves it cleanly: the product of two primes is unique and order-independent. This is the mindset the program is really teaching.

10The Ethos of Financial Modelling and Standards

Why models follow standards, why assumptions sit apart from calculations, why formulas have to be robust enough to trust. Then sensitivity analysis and data tables, because real decisions are made on a range of outcomes, not one number.

11The Splitwise Case: Cleaning Messy Data with Power Query

Meet Power Query and its M code, built for cleaning and reshaping messy data and now expected of every finance analyst. Take one real problem from a messy export to a clean table that answers the questions.

12VBA Macros: Loops and Automation

Meet VBA and learn what a macro and a loop actually are. Then solve a real circular reference: interest depends on cash, cash depends on interest. The exact logic behind revolvers, debt schedules and cash sweeps.

13Finance Functions and Reverse Calculation

Master the time value of money in practice: PMT, NPV, IRR, XIRR and XNPV, the logic behind EMIs, project evaluation, SIPs and fund returns. Then the reverse mindset with Goal Seek: back-solve for break-even, a target IRR, or a price.

Walk Away With Skills That Hold Up at Work

Build models from first principles, not templates.
Formulas that are clean, scalable, and don't break.
Reason your way to an answer when the built-in function fails.
Explain your logic to a senior or in an interview.
